CHINESE LANGUAGE & CULTURE COLLEGE OF BEIJING NORMAL UNIVERSITY

A. Curriculum In addition to general language skill courses like Intensive Chinese Reading, Chinese Listening, as well as Chinese Listening and Writing, different courses are set according to the characteristics of the 3 different specializations of the Chinese Language major.

1.Chinese Language and CultureThis specialization aims to cultivate comprehensive talents who have systematical knowledge of Chinese language and culture which includes basic theories of Chinese society, history, literature and philosophy, and who possess high level of cultural quality and cross-cultural communication ability to work on translation and interpretation, as well as cultural exchanges.

The courses mainly include Chinese Culture, Chinese History, Chinese Social Customs, Pre-Qin Area Philosophers Review, Current Issues and Sino-Foreign Cultural Exchanges. 

2.Business ChineseThis specialization aims to train applied talents who master business and trade terminology and basic international trade knowledge, who understand Chinese business culture and etiquette, and who possess strong business quality to effortlessly work in various foreign business and trade organizations using fluent Chinese.

The courses mainly include Business Chinese, Business Culture, Media Economy, Chinese Economy Profile, Economic Activity Cases and International Trade.

3.Chinese EducationThis specialization aims to train specialized talents who have knowledge of Chinese Ontology, Chinese Culture, Education and Educational Psychology, who are qualified to be a Chinese teacher familiar with the methods of teaching Chinese as a second language, and who are capable of teaching Chinese overseas or work in related fields using Chinese. 

The courses mainly include Modern Chinese, Ancient Chinese, General Theories of Classroom Teaching, Elements of Chinese Teaching Method, Chinese Resources Retrieval and Application and Educational Psychology.

There are also various types of optional courses for students to choose, such as:(1) Language courses: Chinese Pronunciation Guide, Chinese Grammar, Chinese Idioms, Chinese Neologisms, Translation from Chinese into Foreign Languages(2) Cultural courses: Appreciation of Film and Television Works, Appreciation of Ancient Chinese Poetry, Chinese Tourism Geography, Chinese Folk Customs(3) Talent and skills courses: Introduction to Traditional Chinese Painting, Basic Knowledge on Calligraphy, Chinese Folk Songs, Chinese Martial Arts, Traditional Dances(4) Economy and trade courses: China’s Foreign Trade Profile, Business Chinese, Chinese Corporate Culture, Business Negotiation Skills 

B. Evaluation The final performance grade for most of the courses consists of three parts, 30% of the general performance (15% of the attendance + 15% of the classroom and homework performance), 30% of the midterm exam grade and 40% of the final exam grade. A final performance grade equal or greater than 60 is considered passing, enabling students to earn corresponding credits. Calculation methods for specific courses are described under “Undergraduate Courses Introduction”.     

The semester average scores are calculated by GPA:GPA= Course credits × test scoresSemester average scores = GPA = The sum of GPA of all courses / the total course credits 

Students who ask for leave for one-third or more of the total semester hours are not allowed to take the midterm/final exam, and his/her test scores will be recorded as Absence. Students who are absent from class without asking for leave for one-fifth or more of the total semester hours are also not able to take the midterm/final exam. Students are not allowed to take the midterm/final exam of the courses they didn’t select or have withdrawn, and for those who have taken the exam, their scores will be considered invalid.
